today is his birthday. . .

“Birthday Soup is good to eat, but not as good as Birthday Cake.” ~  Else Holmelund MinarikLittle Bear

I asked him out first. We were sophomores in high school and it was the Sadie Hawkins dance. We were both such introverts, both of us shy and reserved, but yet part of that world of high school, where one has to try and fit in. We dated forever and got married the June we both graduated from college.

He is the smartest person I know and yet sometimes has no common sense. He thinks in numbers; everything rounded up or down, multiplied and divided. He is kind and caring and a great father. Parenting by modeling, leaving the lecturing to me.

In our 36 years of marriage we have raised three sons, watched thousands of soccer games, taken photos at proms and one wedding and mourned the death of our four parents. We traveled on cruise ships to the Caribbean and Hawaii, spent three weeks in Europe and slept in tents in the remote forest of the Pacific Northwest.  We have fought and made up and laughed and not talked to each other for days. We have held each other in the middle of the night, when life's worries seem so overwhelming, me often crying, him just holding me, quiet and understanding. We are happy and I feel blessed.

After 40 some years we are still best friends. He is who I want to spend time with. He is my home.  Tonight there will be a nice dinner, a few small gifts and a heart shaped cake drizzled with chocolate Cabernet sauce.

Happy birthday to you, happy 59 years around the sun.
I love you,
xoxo
